Created in 1991 with the help of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the government of Burkina Faso, UERD today makes up an international francophone team of ten full-time researchers. Its reputation for excellence stems from its multi-disciplinary approach towards applied research. It has recognised expertise in three fields: reproductive health; women and poverty; population and development strategies. With respect to the latter, recent work in this field integrates most particularly the question of migration with its implication for land tenure and access to productive resources. UERD has developed strong relationships with several national and international research and development institutions. Amongst international agencies these include AUF (AUPELF-UREF), CICRED, Belgian development, IDRC, Population Council, UNFPA, the Rockefeller and Mellon foundations. It has collaborated with several Universities and research institutes (including Université de Montréal, Université Catholique de Louvain, IRD/ORSTOM, CEPED) and has developed links with other regional organisations such as CERPOD (Mali), URD (Togo), CEFORP (Benin) IFORD (Cameroon), RIPS (Ghana), UEPA. UERD will work in collaboration with several Burkinabè researchers who are specialists in this field.

Hubert Bonayi Dabiré, DEA in demography and doctor of the Université Catholique de Louvain. Bonayi Dabiré is a demographer, in charge of research on migration issues within UERD. He has developed substantial research experience on issues of migration and environment (including questions of resource access) in Burkina Faso since 1994. He has directed and carried out many field surveys and studies on these topics. He will be supervising and coordinating all research activities in Burkina Faso and will provide input into WPs 1, 2 and 3.

In this research project, UERD will collaborate with other centres of excellence within Burkina. Two members of GRAF, Groupe de Recherche et d'Action sur le Foncier are likely to work on this project:

Lacinan Paré, Ph.D in Geography, has worked since 1989 on gestion des terroirs (village lands management) in Burkina Faso and, since 1992, on improving the security of access to land, principally in the cotton zone, as well as on the processes of decentralisation. He would work on research activities in WPs 1 and 2.

Mahamadou Zongo PhD in Anthropology, Director of courses at the Faculty of Letters and Humanities at the University of Ouagadougou. He worked on the PLURI project (in collaboration with IED-UCL) as research associate and has been a consultant to the Ministry of Agriculture. He has participated in a study on the evolution of land transactions in Burkina Faso. He would work on WPs 3 and 4.
