The IRD (formerly ORSTOM) has a long tradition of research on land tenure systems and the dynamics of land use and natural resource rights, often using an interdisciplinary approach (agronomy, geography, sociology, economics). The Laboratoire d'Études Rurales at IRD in Montpellier, where the CLAIMS team will be based, brings together researchers engaged in several programmes in these fields. IRD specialises in detailed field research taking into account changes occurring over a significant period of time. The team involved in this project are also engaged in another programme entitled "Régulations foncières, politiques publiques et logiques d'acteurs" in Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Mexico. The team described here brings together researchers from IRD and other research and university bodies. The researchers' skills lie in: (i) the description and analysis of rights, institutional arrangements and local mechanisms for the administration of resources and land tenure dynamics; (ii) the relationship between agrarian institutions, production systems and other systems; (iii) the place of political action and stakeholder strategies in local socio-political arenas. All have university teaching experience in these themes and various individuals participate in expert missions, committees and traineeships. Jean-Pierre Chauveau is the IRD's Research director for socio-anthropology, and is responsible for the programme "Régulations foncières". He is in charge of teaching at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). He works on social and political anthropology of the land tenure question and public policy in Côte d'Ivoire.
